In the August 2011 issue of Jet Magazine, Wynton Marsalis singled him out for his “Wynton’s Picks: Who’s Got Next” list of young jazz musicians. Pianist Marcus Roberts has called tonight’s guest Alphonso Horne a musician who performs “at the highest level, with creativity and technical perfection.” Horne’s talent emerged early: in high school he was named Outstanding Soloist in the Essentially Ellington Competition, and he won the prestigious National Trumpet Competition in college. calls his “Clip Joint” shows, which explore the entire spectrum of musical performances on film and video, “one of New York’s most entertaining open secrets.” His books include Jazz Singing: America's Great Voices from Bessie Smith to Bebop and Beyond, Sinatra!
